It’s a scary time for the world right now. It’s also made even scarier because no one really knows how long these difficult times are going to last. I don’t want to talk about the circumstances of the world too much at the moment, I am not a reporter or in a position where I could give any helpful news or opinions.
However, I do believe in self-care and why, whilst this is all going on, you should be your number one priority.
I’ve blogged a lot about self-care rituals and ways to take care of yourself from home over the past few days, however, I haven’t exactly been taking my own advice as my mental health isn’t in the best state right now.
Something that I know would benefit me, but that I haven’t been able to do (until recently) since going into lockdown, is leaving the house.
Now, I’m well aware that we are allowed to leave the house still, as long as we’re taking measures to protect ourselves and others by self-distancing for shopping or essential items. I’m also aware that we’re allowed to partake in a form of exercise every day.
And in my mind, I know it would help me. However, leaving the house seems like a big deal at the moment and I just can’t bring myself to do it. I think once I do, it’ll be easier every other time and when we get to the end of this lockdown, I fully don’t expect myself to just rush out the door. I’m not even really sure what I think is going to happen.
My household is all self-isolating apart from my dad, who is a keyworker and still required to go to work. Elliot is also a key worker, yet his company put requirements in place so he can work from home. And as much as I get on with all my family and love them incredible amounts, being confined to a space isn’t good for anyone. Tensions are also running high at the moment. My heart goes out for anyone separated from their family or for anyone who doesn’t have a strong family connection. Just remember, this time is difficult but it won’t last forever.
I want to take back some control. All the rules and regulations are necessary to keep us safe and well, but I haven’t been looking after my mind and body by hiding away in my home. As long as I’m practicing self-distancing, there is nothing wrong with taking a walk in the sunny weather we’re having at the moment or going for a run or cycle.
This is something that I DO have control over, and instead of being scared to go out, I think I NEED to take control of my feelings and get out; even if it’s just for 5-10 minutes.
At the time of writing this, I have actually left the house to go around the block with my dad (and our dogs). Elliot also went for a cycle. It was the first time in over a week that either of us has left the house and I definitely think it helped.
I know some people have not let this lockdown get in the way of them exercising but I definitely did and I definitely needed that little push. So this is me giving you a little push to get out, even if it’s for a short amount of time. It will help.
Any tips or advice? I’m always about if anyone needs a chat.
