The wonderful team over at Dermalogica sent me over a surprise parcel this week, in the form of their New Invisible Physical Defense Broad Spectrum SPF. I’ve been after a good SPF for a while and since I’ve introduced more BHAs & AHAs into my skincare, it’s something I’m paying particular attention to at the moment.
I think I’ve only really been made aware of the importance of facial SPF in the last few years or so. Before then I definitely relied on the SPF found in my moisturizer or foundation.
You might be like me, and just feel really confused about the whole thing too. But to put it simply, SPF is the one thing you need to make sure you have in your skincare routine, and NOT just in the warmer months. ALL year-round.
Wearing sunscreen every day can protect you from exposure to the sun rays. These are invisible rays that are part of the energy that comes from the sun and can burn the skin. They can also cause skin cancer. The UV radiation is made up of three types of rays – Ultraviolet A (UVA), Ultraviolet B (UVB), and Ultraviolet C (UVC).
Wearing an SPF can protect you from these harmful rays. This is something you should be wearing every day, all year round. However, it’s especially important if you have acids in your routine, as these thin the skin and make it easier for the rays to cause damage.
I’ve actually gotten into the habit of wearing SPF every day recently. This might seem excessive but there are so many times where I go and sit in the garden forgetting to put any on or leave the house to run errands without applying any last minute (this is less likely at the minute but the point still stands).
In some circumstances, UVA rays can also pass through normal window panes too (whilst UVB & UVC are mostly blocked). This means you can also be damaging your skin unknowingly from inside your own home, office or car.
It’s a lot to process, isn’t it? However, I think we need to be aware of how damaging being in the sun (without SPF) can be.
A critical step in protecting yourself from UV related skin cancers, photodamage and premature signs of aging are by applying daily full broad-spectrum sunscreen.
As I have mentioned above, Dermalogica has very kindly sent me their Invisible Physical Defense Broad Spectrum SPF (30). Now, this is a weightless suncream which is SO light to apply. I think we all have memories of applying a really thick, heavy white cream all over our bodies when we were younger but SPF has come a long way since then.
Not only will this SPF protect your skin, but its formulated with added Blue Light Protection and also helps soothe away the effects of environmental aggressors. It also contains Bioactive Mushroom Complex which not only helps soothe your skin but also reduces UV induced redness/dryness. It also has the Antioxidant Green tea, which defends skin against radical damage.
This broad-spectrum SPF is suitable for ALL skin types (including sensitive) and is Certified Cruelty-free, Gluten-Free, and Vegan. It’s formulated without artificial fragrances (it doesn’t have a smell at all) and doesn’t contain artificial colours or chemical sunscreens.
I can definitely say that it is lightweight and it also sinks into your skin immediately. It also doesn’t leave a white cast. Most of the time when I’m wearing it, I’ve forgotten I’ve even put any on! SPF really should be the last thing you pop on your skin after your skincare and before make up so I keep it near my make up bag and apply some every day. I’m not shy about how much I apply either.
The only recommendation that they have is that you apply it at least 30 minutes before sun exposure, which is fine for me as I take about 30 minutes to get ready/do my make up anyway.
I would really urge you to look into getting an SPF if you’re not applying some every day. It’s a really simple extra step to your skincare routine which will protect you again damage you don’t even realise is happening. There are loads of really inexpensive options out there too but I’d really recommend spending a tiny bit extra if you can, on something like this Invisible Defense SPF from Dermalogica as it’s so lightweight and doesn’t leave any white residue.
Do you wear SPF every day? Let me know if you do, and what brand you use!
